Companies that Recruit Veterans Often Fail to Hire Them, Data Shows

There is a big difference between hiring veterans and bringing them in at the correct level. Job dissatisfaction and under utilization are two contributing factors to high turnover amongst veterans in their first job after the military.

The buzz companies make around hiring veterans often doesn't result in actual jobs, according to a study by LinkedIn.

Leadership and Service: Celebrating Trailblazing Military Women

The Value Of a Veteran is helping to promote an event celebrating women veterans happening on Thursday Oct 24th (6:00 – 8:30 pm) at the Newseum in Washington, DC.

The event is sponsored by Verizon, and there will be fantastic views of the capitol and the downtown area from the 8th floor of the museum, complimentary refreshments, a speaker panel and networking with other District/Maryland/Virginia-based corporations and the local veteran community.

We hope you will consider attending – our founder, Lisa Rosser, will be there and she’d love to connect with you in person. Please also share this info with other veterans and military supporters in your organization and in your network. Prior military service is not a requirement to attend this event.

While the event celebrates women veterans, we’d love to see our brothers-in-arms attending and supporting. If attending as a group from your organization, please consider wearing clothing, pins or lanyards that identify your organization so we can clearly see you out in force.

12 years ago the veteran unemployment rate was 23%. Employers *wanted* to hire service members, but did not understand military culture or how to translate military resumes or assess the vast experience that comes from military service. Vets were being offered roles far below their capabilities and turnover was high.

I created The Value Of a Veteran in June 2007 specifically to help companies better understand the military demographic and to design veteran recruitment and retention programs that delivered results.

12 years later I am honored that almost 400 major corporations have trusted me to assist them in their goal of recruiting military talent. And, that the term “the value of a veteran” has become the go-to phrase used by those who embrace the unique qualities veterans bring to the workplace and to the campuses where they pursue higher education.

I applaud those organizations that take veteran employment seriously and will continue to assist those companies that desire to incorporate military experience into their overall talent strategies.

Here’s to the next 12 years!
