In this session I will cover:

• Free methods of sourcing service-disabled military talent

• The definition of a “Service-Connected Disabled Veteran”

• The range of disabilities that can be reflected in the term and also how a veteran’s disability can be “service-connected” without necessarily being “combat related.”

• Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS)/Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and why PTS/D is not exclusive to those who have served in the military

• The Veteran’s Administration disability ratings and percentages

• An employer’s responsibilities under the ADA, and possible accommodations for cognitive, visual, hearing and mobility impairment, as well as for amputees and those with PTS/D.

The call for speakers is officially open for my 9th annual Veteran Recruiting Conference!

1. The 2021 Veteran Recruiting Conference is February 23-24, 2021 and will be a VIRTUAL EVENT (#ThanksCOVID).

2. The theme for #VetRec21 is “Recruiting Veterans in a Virtual World” and will focus on tactics for sourcing, engaging and recruiting veterans virtually and what changes are occurring in the military transition timeline. My goal is to have at least 50% of the sessions related to this theme. The other 50% of sessions can be broader topics around veteran recruiting.

Best For Vets 2020: Employers

Just finished a "made my day" phone call with one of our clients (Merck) who let us know that not only did they again make the Military Times "Best for Vets" list for 2020, their rank on that list has been increasing every year since they started working with The Value Of a Veteran.

U.S. Department of Labor Announces Next Step Toward Better Connecting Transitioning Service Members Skills with Employers’ Needs | U.S. Department of Labor

Finalists Announced in Veteran Employment Challenge

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment Training Service (VETS) announced It had chosen three finalists to build an application to better match transitioning service members’ skills with employer needs. The finalists – eightfold.ai, LinkedIn and SquarePeg Hires – will present their software solutions to transitioning service members (TSMs) from various Army installations through virtual Transition Assistance Program (TAP) courses. The TSMs will evaluate their user experience and provide feedback as part of the competitive review process.

In December 2019, VETS with in-kind support in testing and review from the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, established the Veterans Employment Challenge to develop a better job-matching tool. After three phrases which winnowed down more than 50 competitors, the three finalists will soon begin field testing their tools during the challenge’s fourth and final phase, which runs through July 3, 2020. The implementation pilot is set to start July 13, 2020.

Thousands defer plans to leave the military during crisis

The decision to stay in and ride out the pandemic also means fewer transitioning military members will be available for hire this year, for those civilian companies and government agencies that are still hiring.

Across the military, uncertainty about future jobs or college opportunities is driving more service members to re-enlist or at least postpone their scheduled departures.

Right now, there are a lot of voluntary delays in military separation/retirement, but that could quickly change to mandatory (“stop-loss”) the longer this virus stays active.

This will impact your veteran recruiting efforts if your strategy includes sourcing from the transitioning military population.

Proposed steps would allow military services to take action to retain personnel, but officials said they would seek to avoid involuntary measures.

Today's #militaryrecruitingtipthursday discusses the number of military members transitioning out each year and questions you should ask the military base transition centers about the specific volume they expect to transition out of their location.

Asking for that data will help you structure your sourcing strategy to focus on military installations that will give you more "bang for your buck" in terms of finding the types of candidates you are seeking at the experience level you need.

Simply choosing military bases nearest to your work locations may not be the best strategy if those military bases do not have a significant number of transitioning members with the skill sets you seek.
