Believe In Yourself! Staying Positive While Teaching

Looking for ways to help you feel more confident in front of your Zumba® class? ZES™ Steve Boedt shares some advice on how to stay positive, overcome insecurities, and connect better with your students.

1) Stay educated and be prepared

Being educated gives you knowledge. The more knowledge you have, the stronger and more confident you will feel. When you know what you are doing, it will make you stronger and wiser. Education is the key to confidence!

You know how you feel when you teach that song that you know inside out. You know the choreo and music so well that it always gives you that power boost. So, it makes sense that the better you know your music and choreo, the better you feel!

When you think you know your music and choreo at home, it’s not the same as when you stand in front of a group. You need to know it 150% to teach it 100%!

2) Connect With Students

When you talk to your students before a session gets started, you’ll have a better connection with them during the class. This goes both ways, too. When your students have talked to you beforehand, they’ll be more willing to give you the energy and passion you need, plus they are more likely to give you a cheer, a clap, or a smile!

3) Don't judge if you don't know the facts

When you teach without confidence, you see everything around you different… it’s like there’s a filter in front of you. You’ll see negative things in your class much easier, with thoughts like "They’re talking about me!", "They don't like me!", or "They walk away from me because they hate me."

We see body language and usually translate it into a negative story, even when we don't know the facts! It’s our own insecurity that does that.

If you don't know the facts, stop tricking yourself into thinking everything is a negative story... you may be surprised what the truth is!

4) Change your body language

Your body’s posture naturally corresponds to what your mind is thinking. When you feel sad or happy, your body adapts to that feeling. When you feel insecure, all the nerves in your brain will connect to the body and make it feel insecure. But it works the other way around as well. You can change the body posture to change the mind. When you feel insecure, stand up, shoulders back, look in the mirror and scream that you are the BEST! That little voice in your head will tell you otherwise.... so repeat it until that little voice disappears.

5) Post it!

We all need inspiration, so why not give it to yourself in a handwritten message? Hang a post-it note on the mirror of your bathroom, your fridge, your radio, wherever you want. Give yourself that extra boost you need to become confident!

Here’s a few examples:

"Yes! You can do it."

"You are AMAZING."

"You are beautiful, inside and out!"

EXTRA TIP: Don't be your own enemy!

If everybody around says that you are amazing, don't be the only telling yourself you can't or you’re not! Start believing in yourself, ‘cause everybody else already does!
